As part of the lecture series Participatory Research at TH Köln, Laura Popplow (TH Köln), Nils Rottgardt (Un-Label) and I will talk about Dis/ability Design and Participation.
Designing for accessibility often does not happen in a design setting. Instead, people with disabilities constantly create innovative solutions within their daily lives. They are accessibility experts by necessity. In the design of new technologies, these experts must get an equal voice for these technologies to be accessible. Accordingly, teaching accessibility should equally include various dis/ability perspectives. In projects at KISD and the Code & Context program of TH Köln, we are starting to implement participatory teaching and research methods that include these perspectives into teaching and design practice. The talk presents these efforts as well as the mulit-layered translations and problems involved, and our key learnings.
